St Elijah’s Serbian School - Corby

Rowlett Rd Corby, Northamptonshire NN17 2NU

St Elijah’s  Serbian school in Corby was established in March 2011 with the aim that children learn the Serbian language, the Cyrillic alphabet, customs and traditions.

It is registered with the ANSS (www.anss.org.uk), the Association school supplementary classes in Northamptonshire and successfully cooperates with other schools in the area. Classes are held at Woodnewton  primary School (www.woodnewton.northants.sch.uk) every Saturday from 10-12 or 9-12 depending on the numbers of students and activities.

The school is also registered with the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Schools (www.supplementaryeducation.org.uk) and set a new record for how quickly it was awarded Bronze awards for quality and organisation after registration.  We are pursuing ever higher standards as we aim for Silver awards soon.

The school brings together children from 4 to 16 years divided into groups that tare taught by our highly professional and wonderful teachers Silvana Galić, Mirjana Cupać and Biljana Kereš. Through their hard work, big hearts and loving attitude they overcome all obstacles in teaching  children, our Serbian language and customs.

In the first four years of operation, children have learned the basics of our beautiful language, literature and on our most famous writers. They  have mastered the Cyrillic alphabet, learn about Serbian giants, read and learn our folk epics, prepared shows and dramatic ventures which have amused and enchanted audiences in Corby, London, Bedford and Leicester. They have created their own dance tunes, played football, joined the campaign to collect humanitarian aid to flood-hit areas, drawn and printed content for the first ever children's magazine of the UK, symbolically called "Srpko" and achieved very significant and success  with excellent results in last year's first GCSE-level Serbian language exams in cooperation with the Serbian Council of Great Britain.

The school has successfully cooperated with the London Sports Council (www.londonsportssociety.com) and  current and former students and friends participated in a football tournament in February 2015 bringing home several medals and with fond memories of their time with Serbian children from London and autographs with our famous Premiership players Ivanovic and Matić.

St. Elijah’s Serbian school has always shown willingness to cooperate alongside  all organisations which work to preserve Serbian language, culture and customs. It also cooperates with the Church to preserve the Orthodox faith and traditions and we are extremely glad that after a long break the children of Corby have the opportunity to attend Religious Education classes which are led by Protopresbyter Radmilo Stokić whom we warmly welcome to our parish and school.

The work of our Serbian school is transparent with a clear goal - to preserve our language, script and faith, just as St. Sava wrote in “Bequests of Stefan Nemanja" (see www.zaduzbine-nemanjica.rs/Studenica/zavestanje.htm). A nation which loses all its words ceases to be so.

For all information regarding the school or for possible cooperation, please contact Mirjana Karan or Svetlana Radulović Sabadi, or leave a message on the school facebook page (www.facebook.com/SkolaSrpskogJezikasvetiIlijaKorbi).
