With God's help, and with the blessing of our Bishop His Grace Dositej, we started works on the renovation of Holy Prophet St Elijah in Corby from December last year, 2016.
By the end of last year, the roof of the temple was completely renovated (with a 50 year warranty) at a cost of £18,560.
This year we started works in the Church itself. These comprise removal of 12 large frescoes from the walls, which are in need of repair due to the considerable water damage which had streamed down the walls from the roof, removal of the the ceiling above the altar, similarly for the choir loft adjoining the bell tower, removal of the plasterboard on the left wall as well as the ceiling (towards the car park), both cupolas and inadequate electricity, etc.
To date, electrical renovation has been conducted, new plasterboards installed and finished, the issues with the water-logged cupolas are in the process of being repaired and the next issues to be repaired imminently are the frescoes and the interleaved mosaic. We have received three proposals and expect another two in the coming days. Once they are all received, the Committee for renovating the Church will determine the best offer. This is the most delicate part of the renovation since the twelve frescoes need to be repaired and returned to their original state and place (on the pillars, ceilings and walls) due to water damage. Secondly, these are quite expensive works, and we have a specific limit on the funds available to cover the bids for this delicate part of the renovation.
The Committee for the Church renovation has estimated that roughly £35,000 is required to complete the renovation. A special Building Fund (Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Elijah) was founded for this purpose, where all contributions are paid in and bills are paid out. The signatories of the Fund are the members of the Parish Board with Zoran Banović from Corby, as the oldest Trustee, as Treasurer.
From the donations received so far total £20,277 with donors listed at the end of the text. The current works are being financed from this fund, although sufficient funds are still lacking.
In addition to companies that perform certain building works, several of our parishioners have been consistently at the site of the Church offering their own personal contribution and work.
His Grace Bishop Dositej has decided to consecrate the renovated temple on Saturday, November 11th!
The names of the donors shall be memorialised in a pronounced location in the temple in four categories: founder, large donors, donors and those who offered their work. We ask that all parishioners who intend to contribute to this work do so by 30th September in order for their name to be included to the donor list.
We thank all donors for their goodwill, and at the same time we ask all of you who have not yet helped to restore your Church to do so as soon as possible.
Since December 2016, we have worshipped at the church hall , which creates certain difficulties. This situation will remain until renovations are completed on November 11th.
